Sustainability Sunday #2
'And when he sees me in all and sees all in me,
Then I never leave him and he never leaves me.
And he, who in this oneness of love
Loves me in whatever he sees,
Wherever this man may live, In truth, he lives in me...'
Bhagavad Gita, VI:30,31
There is alot people can do to help save natural resources.
Currently here in New South Wales Australia we are under a drought. Dam levels recently have gone up to around 42% capacity. This is Sydney's water supply.
Luckily we have had some rain recently which did top up the dams, but we are still under water restrictions. This means we cannot water the garden on certain times of the day or week and there is absolutely no hosing of driveways or washing of cars with hoses allowed. There are actual water restriction police who go around seeing if people are breaking the law.
This has prompted people to install water tanks which were outlawed by councils a while back ago to get everyone onto town water. Well now they realise that getting people to harvest their own water for watering their garden and washing their cars is a necessity for the times we are living in.
They even give people a rebate on their water bills for having a tank in place depending on the size of the tank. A few years ago we put in a small old feed drum and attached it to the side of the house. It caught a little rain which we used to water all the pot plants and new seedlings that we put around the place.

We really needed a bigger storage system though so last year we purchased a 3500 litre tank. It came with a pump so we attach our hose to it and use it for all watering of the garden, washing the cars, cleaning the house etc. This tank collects most of the water that falls on the main part of the house. The overflow is then fed into pipes which we laid under the ground to water the trees that border the property. Next step will be to attach our grey water or water that comes from the washing machine to the tank so that all water we use is harvested back into the garden. This produces minimal waste.

Everything is yours

Sorry to hear about you water shortages. Here we are having record snowfalls for February.
When I used to live in Central America--we got all of our drinking water from the large vats which was collected during the rainy season. This had to tide us over during the dry season.
Pheonix-B, that is a VERY large tank. How many acres do you have? Congratulations on being in the vangard. The city is lucky its townsfolk are flexible (and probably forgiving?)
Great thing, collecting rainwater. Los Angeles just recently had a guy come in and smack everybody, because the storm control people, the water quality people, and the municipal water supply people didn't ever talk to each other.
Now they are re-focussing on rain water as a resource rather than something to shunt off into the sea, and they should be seeing the rewards of that in the next year or two.
Amazing you can do all that with rain water!!
